Botulinum toxin A is a injectable medication that temporarily paralyzes muscles to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles. The London Room currently carries three brands: Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin.
FDA approved areas include the forehead, glabella, and crow’s feet. It is also used off label for several other treatment areas: bunny lines of the nose, jelly eye roll, gummy smile, Nefertiti lift, lip flip, brow lift, hyperhidrosis of the armpits, masseters for TMJ, and more.
Botulinum toxin can be used in anyone who has started to notice fine lines and wrinkles that are beginning to settle into their skin at rest. These are called static lines. Dynamic lines and wrinkles are seen only with facial movement and expression. This can begin in different ages for different people typically starting in the 20s-30s. The thought is to paralyze the muscles that are causing wrinkles in the skin to smooth out those wrinkles BEFORE they cause more permanent deep set lines. Deeper lines may soften with toxin, but not resolve as completely as lighter lines. Toxin can be used in older ages, but we will likely alter some locations as we do not want to cause further drooping of eyebrows that is a normal part of the aging process.
During your appointment we will discuss the areas you would like to treat. I will go over where we should use it and why, how many units I recommend, and total price before I inject. It is easier if you come to your appointment with a clean, make-up free face. I will take before photos of you making several facial expressions to put in your medical chart. I will mark your face with a skin pen where I will be placing units and inject them with small insulin syringes.
Toxin takes a full 2 weeks to settle in, so do not assess your results as final until then. I like to see patients back at a 2 week follow up to see if we need to refine and add any additional units which are charged at regular price.
Toxin typically lasts between 3-4 months, but can vary due to patient metabolism, dosage given. Toxin should be done no earlier than 90 days between appointments, usually 3-4 times per year. Staying consistent with toxin will prevent deeper lines from being able to settle into your skin.
